Along with the developmentally based curriculum, two of the most distinctive features of Waldorf education are the class teacher and the main lesson.

The class teacher spends several years with the same group of children, providing a long-term relationship of mutual respect, love and understanding, continuity of teaching, and a deep recognition of each childs individual needs. The class teacher teaches the core academic subjects, co-ordinates with specialty subject teachers and provides the link between home and school.

The main lesson, taught by the class teacher, is a daily two-hour period focused on a particular topic in the core academic subjects. Each thematic block continues for approximately four weeks. This allows for full exploration and immersion in a subject. Each student creates a personal record of main lesson work in books that are filled with compositions, observations, maps, diagrams and illustrations.
