Waldorf education is one of the largest and fastest growing educational approaches in the world, with nearly 2500 schools and Kindergartens in over 60 countries.
Waldorf ECE and Kindergarten philosophy:
Waldorf education begins by surrounding the young child with an environment of respect, reverence and wonder for nature, the earth, and human existence. Toys in the Daycare, Parent and Child, Nursery and Kindergarten are simple: wood, sea shells, stones, pine cones, beeswax and sheep’s wool. The child’s imagination transforms a tree stump into a throne; a length of fabric becomes a royal cape or a ship’s sail.
Physical activity forms the basis for healthy development of mind and body; social and imaginative capacities are nurtured by play, songs and stories; while painting and small handwork projects focus the child’s attention. This creates a strong foundation for academic work, which begins formally in the grade school. The Kindergarten day unfolds in an unhurried, natural way, each day following the same rhythm, which gives the young child a sense of security and consistency. The sharing of practical activities such as snack preparation and clean-up, start the child on the path toward personal responsibility and respect for others.
Along with the daily and weekly rhythm, the program also follows the cycle of the year. The celebration of festivals is an important part of the young child’s school life, fostering a meaningful connection to the natural world and bringing a sense of awe and wonder.
